Memoir of Reverend Stephen R. Smith

Thomas J. Sawyer, 1852

Rev. Smith was a Universalist minister born in 1788 in New York and served in Albany, Erie, Jefferson and Oneida counties.   His ministry covered the beginnings of this faith and the establishment of its first churches in the North Country in the early 1800's.  Its doctrines of all of mankind's eternal destiny and its perception of the Savior made it an alternative to traditional philosophies and attracted many adherents.   This memoir contains excerpts of Rev. Smith's sermons as found in his diaries.  It also shares personal remembrances of others who heard him preach. Therefore it can be said that this book traces not only his life, but the rise of this faith in the first half of the 19th century.
