Three Centuries in Champlain Valley
Clinton County, NY
Mrs. George Tuttle, 1909
| This is a most unusually assembled history. Compiled by a
DAR regent, "Three Centuries.." is presented in year
book form. The first page opens with January 1st and has several
yearly entries, including what happened on Jan. 1st in the years 1766,
1801, 1864 and 1894. The book essentially closes with entries for
December 31st. For example, for February 10th, the entry for 1789
reads: "Ethan Allen, being short of hay on account of a partial
failure of crops the preceding summer,... crossed the ice to Allen's
Point, to the house of his friend, Col. Ebenezer Allen..."
Entries were compiled from 'standard histories, fiction, newspaper
files, pamphlets, scrapbooks, and early town records. The journal
of Will Gilliland (early pioneer) figures prominently as does the
history of Plattsburgh.
