The Story of Hartford
Washington County, NY
Mrs. Isabella Brayton, 1929
|
Written in an easy-to-read style, the author divides her book into
two main parts: pre- and post- Civil War. As Town Historian, Mrs.
Brayton treats all manner of history. Besides covering cemeteries,
churches, schools and settlements, she includes notes on such items as
roads, farming, and amusements. This history is especially
readable because it flows chronologically from Hartford's earliest
periods (the pre-white settlement date of 1782) through 1928.
Forty pages are devoted to family genealogies of 'a few Hartford
families.' Partial alphabetical lists of pioneers, Civil War and
WWI soldiers, and Town Officers aid the researcher in finding their
ancestor.
