Pioneers of Utica

Published in 1877, the full title of this history is:
"The
Pioneers of Utica: being Sketches of its Inhabitants and its
Institutions, with the Civil History of the Place from the Earliest
Settlement to the year 1825 the Era of the Opening of the Erie
Canal. There is no Table
of Contents.
The first chapter reviews the
history of Old Fort Schuyler which is counted as the original settlement
of Utica. The earliest settlement of civilians is dated to ca 1784.
The second chapter, The First Charter of Utica, (1798)
contains brief biographies of the earliest settlers.
The author made a concerted effort to record them as a fire in
1848 destroyed the early records. The fourth chapter, The Second
Charter of Utica, (1805) contains brief biographies of the more
prominent men of Utica. The fifth and last chapter, The Third Charter
of Utica, (1817), consumes nearly a third of the total book.
Listings and brief biographies of the town officials, year by
year, as well as societies and schools, are given in this chapter.
