Pioneers of Utica

 M. M.  Bagg, 1877

Published in 1877, the full title of this history is: "The Pioneers of Utica: being Sketches of its Inhabitants and its Institutions, with the Civil History of the Place from the Earliest Settlement to the year 1825 – the Era of the Opening of the Erie Canal.”  There is no Table of Contents.

The first chapter reviews the history of Old Fort Schuyler which is counted as the original settlement of Utica.  The earliest settlement of civilians is dated to ca 1784.  The second chapter, “The First Charter of Utica,” (1798) contains brief biographies of the earliest settlers.  The author made a concerted effort to record them as a fire in 1848 destroyed the early records. The fourth chapter, “The Second Charter of Utica,” (1805) contains brief biographies of the more prominent men of Utica. The fifth and last chapter, “The Third Charter of Utica,” (1817), consumes nearly a third of the total book.  Listings and brief biographies of the town officials, year by year, as well as societies and schools, are given in this chapter.

665 pps., 10” x 6”.  Reprint is soft-bound.  Partial index as in original.
