This simply written history (no Table of Contents, Index or illustrations) nevertheless provides a fascinating window of Oneonta's past. In the Preface, the author writes that his "main object (is) to ..preserve in some form the facts ..derived from the recollection of the older inhabitants as well as from family papers which in the lapse of time, would be forgotten and lost to the public." The five unnamed chapters in this "sketch of history" begins before the Revolutionary War and includes notes on area settlers as well as early church organizations. Interestingly, the inside covers and fly leafs are advertisements for local businesses.
