Church History

Old Fort Herkimer
German Flats Reformed Church

          Lou D. MacWethy, ca 1925

According to this brief history, this edifice, erected in 1729, was the oldest in the Mohawk Valley, second oldest in New York State, and 'there were but few older in the United States.'  This tightly woven history gives brief descriptions on a large number of topics. To mention a few: First Settlers Were Palatines; Massacre of 1757; Why Baptisms Were Not Recorded; and Religious Worship in the Wilderness.  Baptism, marriage and death records were kept intermittently from about 1801 onward. This pamphlet details the names of the families who purchased pews in 1812.  It is well-written and rich in explanation of the early times and seasons.
