        "Sketches"

The good news is that if you have come to this Monthly Tip by way of a Name Search result, you are in luck.  Read on!

On one of my visits to the northern New York, I stopped at the public library in Sandy Creek (Oswego County).  The librarians were most helpful in accommodating my research.  They even went out of their way to suggest certain materials.  (A first!)   One of the notebooks they brought to my attention contained copies of a series called Sketches.  These articles were published in the Sandy Creek News in 1932.

Sketches, I soon found out, covered a lot of family history ground!  Many types of articles appeared - some of them continued for weeks.   Among the many types were at least two reprinted diaries (1860 vintage); articles honoring 19th century ministers who served in Oswego County; a marriage register kept by Rev. Jacob HADLEY and an index to the 1845 New York State Census: Town of Sandy Creek.

New York Ancestry has entered the names of Sketches' 1845 Sandy Creek census index.  The notebook's original material included page numbers/books for the individual's census entry.  Also, the Sketches notebook listed pages of copied articles which featured particular individuals found in the 1845 Census.  As an example, Zebulon BALDWIN appeared in the 1845 Sandy Creek census.  His entry is on page 2 of Census Book 14.  He appears in a Sandy Creek News article found on page 304 of the Sketches notebook.

On page 304 it reads, in part: "Continuing with the entries in the Marriage Register kept by the Rev. Jacob Hadley of Sandy Creek...  (A) wedding occurred January 5, 1843 when Solomon WHEELER, 25, a farmer by occupation, was married to Della M. BALDWIN, aged 20 years, both of Sandy Creek.  Present were John CLARK, John P. CLARK, Jabez BALDWIN, Zebulon BALDWIN, Joseph A. CLARK and Sidney BALDWIN...  Zebulon BALDWIN married Betsey CLARK, coming here from Vermont and settling on a farm in the western part of the town..."  (The article goes on to provide detail on the Baldwin lineage and family members.)

So, that's the good news.  What you need to do now is write to the Sandy Creek Library and ask for a copy of the articles in Sketches which contain your ancestor's name.  (It would be wise to send them a copy of this Monthly Tip article to help explain your request.)   Lastly, don't forget to ask for the Sketches' 1845 Index page naming your  ancestor.  Good luck!
