New York State Annual Register, 1833

By Edwin Williams

Annual Registers are a great source of miscellaneous information.  Mr. Williams was only one of several publishers of such statistics.  Generally speaking, information was given regarding lists of New York State post offices and their postmasters; lists of towns, townships and villages; lists of banks, institutions (such as schools and societies); and lists of railroads, banks, government officials, the military and the judiciary.  Some included almanacs and census information.  (The 1871 Register includes the United States Constitution and population by town according to census reports for 1840, 1845, 1850, 1855, 1860, 1865 and 1870.)
New York Ancestry's collection includes Annual Registers for the years 1833, 1837, 1845, 1858, and 1871.  Williams' 1833 is unique in that it includes lists of New York State clergymen, attorneys, New York City doctors, and New York State newspapers.  Its report re: Institutions is also more comprehensive: names and locations of colleges, universities, theological seminaries, academies, female seminaries, medical institutions, common schools, benevolent societies, literary and scientific institutions, and ships lines.
New York Ancestry indexed all the postmasters recorded in this volume.  If you have reached this page as a result of a name search and wish more information, email us at NewYorkAncestry@aol.com and we will send you the information that the pertinent page(s) contain free of charge for you.
