Oswego County Bulletin

December 2006

As editor of The Genealogical Journal of Oswego County, New York since 2003 (as well as a newsletter for Jefferson County and for Oneida County), editor Patricia R. James (Pat) compiles this online Bulletin containing items found along her route of discovery that don't fit into any of her newsletters.  It is free to all.  Our regular features include:
1. Lost and Found
2. Website WeView
3. Eye-spy
4. Check it out
5. FYI (For Your Information)
6. Special of the Month

If you’d like to be on our email list, just reply to this email with “Subscribe – Oswego” in the subject line and you’re ‘in.’ If not, reply with “Unsubscribe – Oswego.”  If you are on our Jefferson County and/or Oneida County Bulletin lists, please note that each and every Bulletin is unique and contains different information from the others.

To print out this Bulletin, set your margins at 1” on all sides (top, bottom, left and right.)

~ Now to our features ~

1.  Lost & Found –  3 diaries of Hattie BAKER of Holland, NY.  They cover the years 1887 – 1892 when she was 21–26 years old.  $390.00.  Found on ABE Books website, the seller’s description in part says this:
”The names she mentions are as numerous as the entries (which she faithfully made), of which some are:  Ella PECK, Dr. COREY, Frank WARD, Hattie PERRY, BARTON, WOLCOTT, VANDAWALKER, WATKINS, WEBB, John ROGER, SIGER, Asa DRAPER, WETHERBE, Charles JONES, Miles CONKLIN, Fanny BEEBE, F. HAMLIN, KELLOGG, Chester CLARK, MEREDITH, PEABODY, HUNTINGTON, Rosa COFFEY…  She also mentions places such as; Utica, Oswego, Prospect, Syracuse, Halifax and Cloverville.”

2. Website WeView – websites that help with Oswego County research:  LinkPendium.com
Our newsletters have a standard feature: Famous Oswegans.  While searching for people of note who were either born or lived in Oswego County to fill this feature, I came across this fantastic website.  It was created by the founders of Rootsweb, Karen Isaacson and Brian Leverich.  It is a very user-friendly FREE website organized by locality and by surname.
At their home page, if you click on ‘locality,’ you can select your U.S. County of research.  The screen that follows gives you links to a variety of records and other miscellany such as bible records, cemeteries, census, court and legal records, immigration, libraries, maps, military records, obits, school records and vital records.  (In a sense, it is a simpler version of Rootsweb.)
What’s great is that within your locality is a section for biographies organized by surname.  Family history researchers contribute some links; others are from county history books published along the northern migration trail:  Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.
     It’s worth checking out!

3. Eye Spy - features rare (out-of-print or otherwise valuable) books that have a genealogical or historical OswegoCounty slant and are found at bookseller websites, specifically, www.ABE.com.  If one interests you, just go to the website and in the Search box, type in the title to obtain a more definitive description as given by the bookseller.

 1. The Old New York Frontier: Its Wars with Indians and Tories.  Its missionary Schools, Pioneers and Land titles 1614 – 1800.  With Maps and Illustrations.

2. Autobiography of Edward Austin Sheldon
Barnes, Mary Sheldon  ---  1911 --- $20.00 --- 252 pages

5.      FYI –
In our Oswego Bulletin for June 2005, we compiled a survey asking for your input on what the value of a subscription-based website might be worth re: a part of NewYorkAncestry’s services.  A big Thank You to those who responded!
After much review, we have decided to forego the subscription-based idea and replace it with another one we think will be much better for the researcher.  Our plans are that the first part of next year we will offer the researcher a report they can purchase for a nominal sum.  This report will list an index to all of the pages upon which the researcher’s ancestor’s name appears.  The bibliography of books / newsletters consulted will be any that we have compiled, published or reprinted and many that we have not.  (For instance, we have an index to Oneida’s Annals and Recollections as well as the History of Herkimer County, yet we don’t sell reprints to those books.)  We’re excited about this new service.  If you are, too, we’d like to hear from you.
