Now to our features
~
1. Lost & Found – Utica Female
Academy; State of New York in Assembly; Marriage record
Source: Catalogue of the Officers and Members of the Utica Female
Academy (rare booklet)
The Academy was essentially a high school. Students came from all over
but for the most part was composed of those who resided in Oneida and the
surrounding counties. Total enrollment in 1837 was 243; in 1840, it was 242.
In the catalogue for the school year, 1837-1838, these two young ladies were
from Oswego County:
Sarah GAYLORD of the Town of Cleveland
Cornelia EAGLE of the Town of Oswego
Source: State of New York, No. 81, IN ASSEMBLY February 14,
1870. p. 7
June 1st – Patrick McARDLE, convicted March 24, 1868, of
assault with a deadly weapon; Oswego county; term, two years and one mont.
Recommended by judge, district attorney, city and county officers, Senator
and members of Assembly, of Oswego county, and by Honorables Cheney AMES,
J. C. CHURCHILL, H.C. BENEDICT and many others, who unite in
stating that McARDLE’s conduct had always, previous to this offense, been
good, and that this crime was rather the result of carelessness than of any
criminal intent.
Source: Parish registers of the Christian Church in Gananoque, Leeds Co.,
Ontario, Canada
Married May 17, 1875: Charles Otis METCALF, batchelor, Town of Belleville
(Canada) and Ellen SCOTT, widow, of the City of Oswego, New York. (p.
122)
2. Website WeView – Cornell
University’s digital online library
New York State Historical Literature at http//:historical.library.cornell.edu/nys
This is an example of one of the many websites that could have valuable
information on your family but you'd never know it. When you do a google search
for your ancestor, the results only show the names that have been picked up on
pages that exist on the websites themselves. Google, etc. does not pick up names
that are stored in a website's offline database. Only when you are at that
website and do a search does your ancestor's name called up and appear as a
result.
By typing into your browser the website address shown above, you will
come to a page that gives you the options of: About, Browse, Home, Search and
Help. When you select Browse, table of alphabetic letters appears. You can
search this page by author or title. When you select SEARCH, three fields
appear giving you the choice of searching by author, title or full text. By
choosing full text, you have the ability to enter keywords such as your
ancestral surname or even his full name. For most family historian, the full
text option is the one you will want. You can further define your search by
date.
this website is worth a look!
3. Eye Spy - books found at
www.ABE.com featuring rare (out-or-print or otherwise valuable) books that have
a genealogical or historical interest re: Oswego County. A more detailed
description of the following titles is found at the end of this Bulletin.

5. FYI
– For those on the road… www.mail2web.com
This summer, Rex and I traveled across the country with our final
destination as northern New York (where else??). Along the way, we’d stop to
pick up our email at available spots. In one library, they employed a program
to retrieve email that safe-guarded their systems, etc. It was Mail2web.com.
It’s easy to use: just type in your user name and password in addition to a
security feature. The presentation is pleasing and it is much faster than,
say, going through AOL’s own website. It also has the added feature of still
listing emails today that you may have already discarded yesterday. (Added
tip: You can keep your AOL email address even when you decide to change
servers. AOL charges $5 a month for this option. This may be true of other
ISPs.)
6. Special of the Month –

“Oswego Package Deal” through our website for only $25.00 plus $5.00

Research Services

www.NewYorkAncestry.com.) Normally, it costs $4.00 to copy (up to four)

Sincerely,

Book Description: The Oswego County Board of Supervisors. Soft Cover. Book
Condition: Very Good to Near Fine. Extremely rare and out of print title in
the Oswego History collectibles market. Has been read, maybe reread several
times. Signs of age (paperback is now ecru/tanned vs. sharp white). But no
abuse beyond a bit of soiling. No poor storage. Former owner gave this book
to her 'Pop' on his birthday, 5/28/72. With no date, this anchors this title
to somewhere in the last thirty years. Finn signed the book on the title
page, next to the words Old Shipping in ballpoint pen. By Author. Bookseller
