Oneida County Bulletin

 January 2006

As editor of The Genealogical Journal of Oneida County, New York (as well as for Jefferson County), editor Patricia R. James (PJ) compiles this online Bulletin containing items found along her route of discovery that don't fit into any of her newsletters.  It is free to all.

(If you wish to print this email Bulletin out, set margins for 1” all around.)

1.  Lost & Found
–:
Many schools printed yearly catalogs naming their courses of study, their teachers and their pupils.  For researchers looking for ancestors, etc. of the ‘gentler sex,’ catalogs for All Girls’ Schools can be a wonderful resource – especially before 1850.  In our (recently published)   Genealogical Journal of Oneida County, New York for 2004, catalogs for the Utica Female Academy’s selected years between 1843 – 1871 have been indexed.   See Section 4. What’s New for more details.)  For this Section, however, we present a few Oneida residents that attended schools outside of Oneida --
Oneida students (and faculty) at Ives Seminary, located at Antwerp, Jefferson Co., 1877:  Rev. Fred WIDMER; Malona M. SMITH; Freeman A. VANDERWALKER
Total enrollment: 214.
Two Oneida students (total enrollment all four grades: 55) at the Theological Seminary, located at Auburn, NY, 1825: Henry HOTCHKISS of Paris; Hiram H. KELLOGG of Clinton.

2. Website WeView - websites that help with Oneida County research: Woodgate Free Library
This website, begun a few years ago, is a digital library of local history and genealogy records and adds to its online collection frequently.  The address is: www.midyork.org/woodgate.
What’s great about this site is that it has a Search Box each of its main pages.  The results given include all places found at this site, not just the page you’re viewing.  There are two sections:
     1.  ”Woodgate History” includes photos, newspaper clippings, miscellany arranged by year.
     2.  ”Local Genealogy” includes abstracts from several cemeteries plus --
Boonville Death Records (from Town and Village records) roughly 1884 – 1915; and
Boonville Ledger (newspaper notices of marriages and deaths) 1853 – 1855.

Woodgate History lists years 1862, 1863, 1874, 1889 through 1923 (excludes 1894, 1898, 1902, 1905, 1909).  It continues with 1960 through 1978 without exception. For example, “1862” contains an obituary for Mrs. Frederick TOUSE (nee Catherine DUPPER) who was born on May 20, 1862 at White Corners.  (Her death date was not given).  “1889” is a digital copy of a memorandum account book with local townspeople’s names on pages 8, 16 and 17.  Examples are: Alonzo PATTER, John ISLEY and Leana SCHAEFER.

Local Genealogy’s cemeteries are Carmichael Hill, Egypt, Frenchville, Gifford, Lee Valley, North Steuben, Steuben Corners, St. Patrick’s, Westernville Presbyterian, and White Lake.
These several cemeteries and the Boonville Death Records can also be found at Rootsweb.com for Oneida County.  The Death Records at Rootsweb do not have a Search function and the records listed there are, in some cases, not as complete as at Woodgate Library’s site.  As for the Boonville Ledger, these records are only found at this site.  They are not at Rootsweb.

5.  FYI - This tidbit might be helpful to those of us doing English research:
In England, there was a ‘voluntary’ cost to the priest officiating at the baptism (half a crown, I’m told). So many poor families simply waited until there were several babies to be baptized from the same family and got a batch done for the same half a crown!
(“Stretching the Family Budget” contributed to Rootsweb’s ezine of June 9, 2004, p. 12
by Professor Graham Martin in Australia)
