Now to our regular features:
1. Lost & Found – A novice researcher will often insist that their
ancestral surname was GREEN and won’t take a second look at GREENE. Likewise,
researchers have a tendency to look exclusively in one county only and not
surrounding counties for information. The Russia Union Church (Herkimer County)
was shared by several denominations beginning in 1820. The minister who
authored the 112 page history, Rev. Roger F. WILLIAMS, included many
genealogies of families that attended services there. The following is an
example of an average sketch of a family with roots in Oneida County
(capitalization and emboldening of surnames added; Oneida County places
underlined):
MARCY
Benjamin MARCY married Lois GILBERT. She was 21 years of age
and he was 52. They resided in Mansfield, Windham County, CT. Benjamin and
Loisa (GILBERT) MARCY had children: Calvin, Olive, Clara, Alpheus
and Lebbeus.
Lebbeus (twin of Alpheus) was born June 17, 1791 in Windham Co., CT; died
Feb. 28, 1877 in Monroe, PA, where he settled in 1820 and for many years was a
valued member of that community. He left a large family.
Alpheus (his twin), while a resident of his native state served in the War
of 1812. In 1816, he settled near South Trenton, Oneida Co., NY. In
1818, he married Harriett BARROWS who was born on Aug. 7, 1798 in Trenton
and died on Oct. 15, 1881 in Russia, Herkimer Co., NY. She was the daughter of
Lemuel and Hannah M. (STORRS) BARROWS. In early life, she became
a Christian and a zealous member of the Baptist Church. She was a great reader
of religious literature. After their marriage, Alpheus and Harriett settled in
Fairfield, Herkimer County on a farm. In 1819, they returned to the South
Trenton farm and in 1828 settled in Russia where they spent the rest of their
days. In his younger days, Alpheus was a Whig and in later life a Democrat. He
died Aug. 22, 1981 in Russia. The children of Alpheus and Harriett were:
1. Phares R., born Oct. 17, 1820; died Oct. 28, 1849.
2. Sarah, married in 1847, Leavitt HINES. He was born in 1825; died
in 1864; the on of Russell and Allah (HINMAN) Hines of Norway, NY. A son
is A. L. HINES of Newport (1930).
3. Catherine, married 1st, Reuben HALLADAY; 2nd,
William Riley HALLADAY. A daughter is Mrs. Minerva SALISBURY of
Poland, NY (1930).
4. David, born April 7, 1826, in Trenton, NY; married Oct. 10,
1849, Lucinda HIBBARD. She was born on June 12, 1824 in Camden, Ontario,
Canada; died Dec. 26, 1891 in Russia, the daughter of Samuel HIBBARD, a
verteran of the War of 1812. She was converted and joined the Methodist
Episcopal Church.
She attended Newburg Academy in Canada and taught school several terms.
Mr. And Mrs. David MARCY were prominent in the Russia Methodist Episcopal
Church. He was a farmer. He died Jan. 13, 1891 in Russia. David and Lucinda
had children: Josephine, wife of J. A. BASSETT; Lemuel, Adeliade (wife of
Pelton L. CARPENTER); Frank and Waley H.
5. Storrs, born July 18, 1828 in Russia, married Betsey PRINDLE,
born Oct. 22, 1835; died Jan. 10, 1892, the daughter of Charles J. and Clariss (SMITH)
PRINDLE. Storrs was a farmer and sheep raiser in Russia. He and his
wife were connected with the Russia Methodist Episcopal Church. He died Dec.
27, 1892 in Russia. There children were: Phares, Sherman and Jennie.
6. Jane E., born May 4, 1839; died May 18, 1858.

2. Website WeView - websites influencing your Oneida
County research.
As many settlers of Welsh extraction resided in Oneida County,
www.WalesOnTheWeb.org is a website that has many helpful links to other
websites with a focus on Welsh genealogy:
Here’s another, smaller website with a narrow (Welsh)
focus:
www.welshmariners.org.
It has an online index of 20,000 Welsh merchant masters, mates and engineers
active from 1800 to 1945.
Take a look at this free site on Rootsweb by an individual who’s
transcribed a large amount of genealogical materials:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jdevlin/newyork. You’d be amazed
at the amount of work Jane Devlin’s done! A good share of it is in Dutchess,
Westchester and Orange County but there’s a smattering done ‘closer to home’ –
Onondaga and Montgomery Counties. Most of the work is of church records and
cemeteries but there are some military records as well.
3. Eye Spy - features rare (out-or-print or otherwise valuable) books
that have a genealogical or historical Oneida County slant and are found at
bookseller websites, specifically,
www.ABE.com. Just type in the title to obtain the description given below
and get more information re: the bookseller as well. (Other selections
appear at the end of this email.)

5. FYI
This tidbit might be helpful to those of us doing English research:
In England, there was a ‘voluntary’ cost to the priest officiating at the
baptism (half a crown, I’m told). So many poor families simply waited until
there were several babnies to be baptized from the same family and got a batch
done for the same half a crown!
(“Stretching the Family Budget” contributed to Rootsweb’s ezine of June 9,
2004, p. 12
by Professor Graham Martin in Australia)
