Now to our features

1. Lost & Found – Recently, I purchased a copy
of the 1884 report of the "Journal of the Board of Supervisors of Jefferson
County, NY." Among the nuggets of information appearing within its
approximately 200 pages is a list of orphans housed in the Jefferson County
Orphan Asylum on p.126. The residence indicates the town responsible for
the upkeep of the year 1884 for that child. In future issues of "The
Genealogical Journal of Jefferson County, New York," I plan to index and
extract more of this book.

2. Website WeView – websites that help
your research with a focus on Jefferson County:
www.FamilySearch.org
The Family History Library of Salt Lake City's website,
FamilySearch.org, is among the first places a newcomer to genealogy begins.
Whether you are a beginner or an advanced family historian, a visit to this
website periodically may reward and surprise you. On the Home Page under
the link, "Search Records," click on Record Search Pilot. Up comes a
screen that invites you to enter your ancestor's name. A search is made
from resources indexed to date including state vital records, Civil War Pension
Card Files, U.S. Federal Census (1850-1900), England's Census (1841, 1851 and
1861), Ellis Island Passenger Arrival Lists (1892 - 1924) and the U.S. Social
Security Death Index.
When the results appear on the left side of your
screen, you may hold your cursor over the name to obtain details given in the
record source. For instance, when the results returned include a census
record, you'll see his name, residence, age, estimated birth year, birth place,
gender, film number, dwelling number and household number. If you wish to
see the census record image real-time, you may buy a subscription to an online
organization featuring it. If you can wait a week, you can order the film
for less through your local Family History Center. In some cases (such as
the Ohio Death records), you may be able to see the recorded image real-time for
free.
This service is only one of several that the Family
History Library offers to researchers at no charge. Check them out!

What's New – NewYorkAncestry.com has a new 'face.'
It's been a long time in coming. We've revamped our
website in the belief that the new format will be easier to navigate and more
relative to your research. Here are the Main Topics: Rare Books;
Place Names; Famous (NY) Folks; Great Websites to Visit; and Techniques for the
Hard to Find. Right now it's a skeleton with a little meat on the bones.
(For instance: Rare Books: Jefferson County; Famous Folks: Do Gooders, Bad Boys,
Mad Scientists; Techniques for the Hard-to-Find: 10 Easy Steps. As we add
more and more, we'll let you know in these Bulletins.
There is a search box for finding out in what publications
your ancestors might appear. We have about 300,000 names coming from the
1800's in northern New York We actively produce a small genealogy
newsletter for Jefferson County so those names will be added as they are
published.
