Website WeView – The monumentous work of
Coralynn Brown
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hubbard/NNY_index/surnames.html
If you’ve spent any time in researching northern New York
resources in genealogical and historical libraries, etc., you’ve probably come
across a series of works done in 1910 by William Richard Cutter. He authored
massive works entitled “Genealogical and Family History” for northern New York,
central New York and western New York each. The No. NY set is 1225
pages by itself! (Reprints available for $135.00 through the Genealogical
Publishing Company. This 3 volume set is also available on microfiche at or
through LDS’ Family History Libraries.)
Separated by family surname and further divided via one particular
descendant lineage is chosen, name after name after name (with date and
sometimes place) can be found in Cutter’s works. Each set of volumes had its
own index – of sorts: the names that found their way into the original
indexes were the names of the chosen lineages only. For instance,
Nathaniel BALL (p. 203 in Vol. 1), of Newark, NJ (fourth generation from
William Ball of New Haven, CT who immigrated from England ca. 1643), had
children Phoebe, Rhoda, Rebecca, James, Salome, Esther, Aaron (who married Petty
WADE first and Hannah WELLS second), Nehemiah, Paul, Davis, and
Eunice (who married Dr. Wats BONNEL). Of Nathaniel’s 11 children,
only one’s name appears in the original index: that of his son, Nehemiah,
who is featured as the 5th generation of this particular BALL
lineage.
As a researcher, you might have been willing to slog through all
the BALL names in the original index in the hopes that you might
eventually find out that your ancestor, Davis BALL, was Nathaniel’s
son. However, if you were researching the WADE lineage, you would
never have found Petty (WADE), wife of Aaron BALL, without a
lot of hard, time consuming research.
That is, until now!!! Coralynn Brown has transcribed the 3 volume set for
northern NY– all 1225 pages. There are probably some surprises awaiting you!
So, good luck and happy hunting! If you want to drop a personal ‘thank you’ to
Coralynn for her untold, unsung hours of work, you may email her at:
CL39811@cox.net. She told me she spent 8+ months completing this project.

5. FYI
– The Gravestone Scribes (John and Ellen Bartlett with Gus Rogers)
have some years hence published a series of books detailing cemetery
transcriptions of many Jefferson County Towns. (Folks, they did ALL the work
themselves by going to the cemeteries and rubbing the stones, etc. and more
where necessary.) This is their email address:
dudlle@aol.com. (That’s 2 L’s as in ‘lady’ in the middle of that address –
not number 1’s!) When ordering a specific work by email, please put the
book title in the subject area.
Otherwise, your email may wind up in the spam folder and summarily deleted.
You can find a list and description of their titles at
Rootsweb.com/~nyjeffer.

Pat and Rex James of www.NewYorkAncestry.com
