 (Just a little behind, sigh…)
Surnames in the Dec issue of the Jefferson County newsletter are at the end of this email.

1. Lost & Found – A novice researcher will always think to look in surrounding counties (and in this case, another country!) that borders Jefferson County.  The following records are an example of why border counties should not be overlooked when doing research:

Source: Parish registers of Christ’s Church in
Gananoque, Leeds and Grenville County, Ontario, Canada

Earl COMSTOCK of Philadelphia, Jefferson County, NY and Jane Ann THOMSON of Leeds twp, Canada were married on 28 December 1878.   (No witnesses recorded.)

Duncan MacDONELL Wolfe Island, Canada and Mary McCRAE of Grindstone Island, Clayton, Jefferson Co., NY were married on 10 February 1873.
Witnesses: Alex SKINNER and Flora McCREY.

F. R. FORSYTHE of Cape Vincent, Jefferson County, NY and Henrietta MADDOCK of Gananoque, Canada were married on 19 June 1860.  Witnesses: __ GILLESPIE and P.C. MADDOCK

2. Website WeView  –  America's First Families   www.linkline.com/personal/xymox

This is a lineage society with a great online presence.  Established in 1998, it honors our colonial ancestors that arrived in the 1600’s and settled in the early American states of New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.  Go to their website and “view the ANCESTOR ROLL OF HONOR biographies and the ANCESTOR DATA BASE with thousands of proven 1600s Colonial Ancestors."
The two large databases have different focuses.  The links in the first database, Ancestor Roll of Honor, are submissions from descendants that tell the ancestors' history.  The second large database, "America's First Families Source Files Updates" contain ancestors' genealogy.  There are tables and tables of generation after generation.  Some are submitted by members; others are what was submitted to the "Daughters of the American Colonists" back in 1929 and 1930, (for the most part).
As a member of this Society, you may earn a certificate for submitting an ancestor to the Roll of Honor.  It is beautifully done.  This site is highly recommended.

3. Eye Spy - features rare (out-or-print or otherwise valuable) books that have   genealogical / historical Jefferson County interest and may be found at bookseller websites…..The name of Harold Nestler may sound familiar to some of you.  He is the compiler of several editions of a bibliography of New York historical publications of 19th century.  Did you know that he sends out a circular twice a year (January and September) with ‘stuff’ he’s found?  It’s called “New York State Americana.”  You might want to get on his mailing list.  Here’s an example of his most recent offerings in January’s circular:

288. Missionary Work in NY State, early 1830’s.  Education and Missionary Society.  First Annual Report … Protestant Episcopal Church.  Annual Meeting. Oct. 4, 1832.  wrps. 39 pp. (Important: Reports by missionaries of the work they had done in a number of counties in NY State.  Some quite detailed.)  lacks wrps, foxed.  $35.00

315.  In 1836, Thomas F. Gordon published his fine Gazetteer of the State of New York.  He had a chapter on each County in the State with a small map of the County.  As a rule each chapter included: topography, data on each town, statistics.  We have acquired an incomplete copy…and are selling available chapters separately:
324. Jefferson County             9 pp.                $8.00

Mr. Nestler’s policy is “first come, first serve.”  He has no website but does take orders over the phone. His address is: 13 Pennington Ave.  Waldwick, NJ 07463.  His phone number is:  1-201-444-7413.

The Clintsman Family: Five Generations from 1752.  Larry D. Brooks, author.  Published 2003.  5.5" x 8.5", paper, index, 410 pp, ISBN# 1-58549-888-2.  $35.50.
 WillowBend Books.
The Clintsman family settled in the New York counties of Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence.  Every Clintsman in the United States today is descended from Christoph, one of the pioneers of Champion, Jefferson County, NY. This family history includes 627 people spread over 5 generations.  Female lines include  CROWNER and GATES.  Chap. 1: Christoph Klinsman, progenitor; Chap. 2 - 5: generations 2 - 5; Chap. 6: Sources and notes.  "This is a book which deserves a place in libraries specializing in genealogy or in the history of northern New York state.  There is a need for more family historians with Larry Brooks' thoroughness and drive to see their family histories through to completion.  We will all be richer for the preservation of these histories." - Norm Young, president of the St. Lawrence Valley (NY) Genealogy Society.
