Regular
Features
1. Lost & Found – A novice researcher will often insist that their
ancestral surname was GREEN and won’t take a second look at GREENE. Likewise,
researchers have a tendency to look exclusively in one county only and not
surrounding counties for information. Russia Union Church*
was shared by several denominations beginning in 1820. Most wonderfully, the
author of this 112 page history, Rev. Roger F. WILLIAMS, included many
genealogies of families that attended services there. The following is an
example of an average sketch (capitalization of surnames and emboldening added;
place names in Jefferson County are underlined):
FRAME
William Frame, M.D. was born April 18, 1777, in Ulster County, New York; died
September 5, 1847, in De Pauville, New York. He was the son of Jacob
Frame, a Revolutionary soldier. William Frame studied medicine under Dr. Westel
WILLOUGHBY of Newport. He commenced to practice in Russia in 1804 and
was the first physician in town. He moved to Norway in 1817, and to De
Pauville in 1822. His wife, Clarissa JOY, whom he married January 2,
1806, was born April 6, 1787, in Brattleboro, Vermont, the daughter of Major
Abiathar JOY. She died March 19, 1882, in De Pauville, New
York. Clarissa Frame was converted in 1804 and joined the Free Will Baptist
Church; in 1825 she became a member of the De Pauville Methodist
Episcopal Church. For 78 years she had been a church member. She retained her
mental faculties to the last. William and Clarissa (Joy) Frame had children:
1. Mary, died in infancy.
2. Another infant.
3. Ann, married Phineas OSBORNE of De Pauville. Their children
are: P.A. Osborne, Chaumont, New York; William Osborne of Honeoye Falls,
New York.
4. Luke E., M.D. (1812-1883); married Louise J. HUNT (1818-1896). Their
grandson is Prof. Nat T. Frame of West Virginia University, Morgantown, West
Virginia.
5. Delilah, married Abram LOWE, De Pauville, New York. Her son,
William, lives at De Pauville, New York.

2. Website WeView - Darci’s Place of Origins Genealogical Site
(To find, go to
www.Rootsweb.com - Resources at New York State: Jefferson County)
This is a free site where the compiler, Darci, has extended a magnificent
service for those whose ancestors and kindred migrated from New York to
Wisconsin. At her site, you may find indexes to several New York and
Wisconsin county histories. She has even put up online several histories
whereby the actual sketch can be read. (Below is an example.) There is a great
search engine where you can put in either a surname or location.
This site is well worth the look!
”William H. ELMER was born in 1833 in Jefferson Co., NY. He was living in
1851 in Fairwater, Fond du Lac Co., WI. He was living in 1868 in Berlin, Green
Lake Co., WI. He was listed in biography, Page 355 (History of Green Lake County
Section) Have one daughter. Parents: John ELMER and Elizabeth CASTOR.
He was married to Louisa M. DRAKE in 1854.” (Source: History of
Northern Wisconsin 1881)
3. Eye Spy – rare, out-or-print, etc. books with
a genealogical/historical Jefferson County slant that were located in
www.ABE.com.
4. FYI - Some of you are familiar with a book, “Links in the
Chain.” It is a series of collected articles written by Solon MASSEY in
the 1850’s and published in the Watertown Daily Times. It’s a great book
which reminisced about early Jefferson County – both her people and places - in
a folksie way. (By doing a Name Search at my website, you can know if your
ancestor is in this book.) Last I knew, the Jefferson County History Museum in
Watertown was selling this book.
What I want to share with you is that this book may not
include all of Massey’s articles! Richard Hungerford (who previously indexed
marriages and death notices from the New York Reformer) informed me of
this possibility. I’ll have more to report in our next online Bulletin.
