Jefferson County Bulletin

September 2003

As editor of The Genealogical Journal of Jefferson County, New York, Pat (Patricia R. James) is introducing a free online bulletin of items she's found along her route of discovery that don't fit into her "no frills" newsletter.  Such would include:

1. Lost & Found - miscellaneous vital records found in out-of-the-way places.  Example:
Seth C. WOOD died on Oct. 23, 1862 in City Point, VA.  He is the only son of Rev. Enos WOOD, late of Hopkinton, St. Lawrence Co., now of Evans Mills, Jefferson County.  (Source: the newspaper, Courier-Freeman of Potsdam, NY.  Extracted for the St. Lawrence Valley Genealogy Society newsletter, Vol. 19, p. 9)

2.  Website WeView - websites possibly influencing your Jefferson County researcher.
Example:  The Wisconsin Historical Society has an online database of about 90,000 Civil War volunteer soldiers serving from WI.  A quick search yielding postive result(s) provides you with the option of purchasing military records that are different from those held at the National Archives.  Go to:  www.wisconsinhistory.org  then add 'genealogy' to the website's address in your browser and click to arrive at the genealogy page.

3.  Eye Spy - books found at websites featuring rare (out-or-print or otherwise valuable) books that have a  genealogical or historical Jefferson County slant.  Example: Available from Douglas Gunn Books for $30.00:

Jefferson County in the World War.
Watertown NY:: Hungerford-Holbrook Co, 1920. 1920 - 208pp. Owner name ffep. A record of the activities of the various organizations and individuals who devoted their energies to the cause of freedom in the great conflict of 1914-1918, containing the honor roll of those who served in Army, Navy and Marine and the portraits of those who made the supreme sacrifice. , VG hardcover, no dust jacket. Clean text. First edition. Bookseller Inventory #014852

4.  What's New - brief summary of additions to NewYorkAncestry.com.
Example: Helpful Research Tips; Fact & Fun pages; Names from rare works newly indexed and uploaded to the searchable database.
This month: Take a quiz and win the publication of your choice!

5.  FYI - New finds, publications, etc. appearing on the Jefferson County genealogy scene.  Example:
The Historical Association of South Jefferson County announced the recent acquisition of an 1886 ledger kept by James STEELE at his store in Mannsville.  If you've never seen one of these, they are can be a treasure!  Store owners would keep a page in the ledger for each regular customer detailing his/her purchases.  A list of the customer names might provide clues to where your ancestor lived at that date, his culinary habits and needs, whether or not relatives also lived nearby.  A look at your ancestor's page would reveal something of his culinary habits and needs.

6.  Comments - a chance for you to add your voice.

The plan is to send this bulletin out once a month.
