Our Family Tree
by Myrtle Porter Redd
My dearly beloved family tree --
Do you know what you mean to me?
Each branch or twig, though stout or thin,
Grown up with the tree or crafted in.
Each leaf and bud a precious part
Enshrined forever in my heart.
To some you may be just a common tree,
Poor timber, really - not much to see.
To me, you are extra special wood.
Every branch is firm and good;
Each graceful bough is straight and fine,
A lovely sight, this tree of mine.
To me, you are Life and Growth and Success.
A sure Refuge from want and from emptiness;
Fulfillment of all that is best in me,
The purpose of Time and Eternity.
You mean Rest, Shelter, Contentment and Joy --
A Faith in the future that none can destroy.
You mean Laughter, Music, Sunshine and Air;
The sweetness of Service and the answer to Prayer.
I know our tree will spread its arms
Sheltering many from the storms of life
And be a heaven sweet
Where weary souls may rest and eat
Finding new strength to travel on
When strength and hope seem spent and gone.
I know our tree will stand the test
Of war and greed and selfishness
And show its strength and grow and give
And help a wounded world to live.
Truly I am proud to be
Some of the roots of
Our Family Tree.
